PREFACE
Dear readers, when the authors of the "Radio Amateur's Conversation Guide" got interested in amateur radio in the beginning of1960's, one of the first purchases connected with the hobby was the "Ham's Interpreter" by OH2SQ and DLICU. Using this guide, young schoolboys were able to work DX stations in their own language, which was in many cases necessary in order to get a new DXCC country. Further developing their knowledge of foreign languages with the base provided by the "Ham's Interpreter" was much easier and practicing the newly gained mastery was a pure pleasure to be tried out on the ham bands.
Since the radio amateur hobby has become technically more sophisticated and the "Ham 's Interpreter" has disappeared from the bookshops, the demand for a new modern conversation guide satisfying the needs of the radio amateur fraternity has become evident. To meet this need the Radio Amateur's Conversation Guide was compiled. It represents the fruit of cooperation of several DX operators in different parts of the world.

The English text was written by OHIBR and OH2BAD and was then checked by Laurie Margolis, G3UML. The following well-known DXers did translations into other languages:

German- Bernd v. Bojan, DJTYE    Spanish Jorge Cangas, EA4LH
French- the Clipperton DX Club (sec. Bernard Chereau, F91E)
Portuguese Gerson Rissin, PYIAPS and Jemesson Faria, PYTBXC
Italian- Umberto Cambieri, I2CBM and Antonio Vernucci, IHJX
Japanese Nobyasu Itoh, JAIKSO and Naoki Akiyama, JH1VRQ
Russian Vladimir Kaplun, UAICK

Russian is represented twice, first in Cyrillic letters, then also in the Latin alphabet for the convenience of non-Soviet readers wishing to use the Guide. A phonetic transliteration conforming to general European practice was furnished by OHIBR.
We wish to extend our heartiest thanks to all fellow radio enthusiasts who have participated in this project. Valuable help in checking the translations was given by Jean-Pierre Guillou, F9RM and Nestor Coll, YV5BID/OH2ZAN.
This booklet is only the first step towards a more comprehensive project, but we feel that the most urgent need has been met. We intend to publish additional supplements to the Guide in minor languages, which are in less demand among the radio amateur fraternity. Finnish and Serbo-Croatian translations have already been made. Swedish is next in line and other languages will follow.
We hope that our readers will excuse any errors and omissions in the Guide. H e would appreciate it if readers will kindly send corrections and additions to the following address: TRANSELECTRO OY, P.O. Box 119, SF-04201 Kerava, Finland.
If the Radio Amateur's Conversation Guide helps to foster goodwill among radio amateurs in different countries, how far they may be from one another in many respects, the labor of the compilers of this Guide will have been fully rewarded.
